Kai Deng K130 Alpha Review – The Flying Egg Drone

Kai Deng has taken drone design to the next level. When thinking about quadcopters and drones, a standard picture probably forms in your head. This new drone by Kai Deng looks like an egg, a flying egg that is.

The Kai Deng K130 Alpha Egg Drone is the most unique drone I have ever flown. While folded up, it has the body of an egg. You can easily extend the propeller arms, transforming the egg into a quadcopter.

So far, Kai Deng has produced two versions of this drone. This first version is the one that comes without a controller. This is the one I am reviewing. Instead of using a transmitter, you use your phone to control the drone. You can also see a live FPV view on the phone, showing exactly what the Alpha Egg Drone sees. They also manufacture a version of the drone that does come with a controller.

  • Camera Quality: 0.3MP
  • Drone Battery: 3.7V 200mAh Lipo

Features

The K130 made by Kai Deng has a variety of features that other drones of this price point are not likely to have. For one, it can auto hover. This is accomplished by letting go of the virtual control stick on the smartphone app. The drone then hovers in place without moving.

There is a gravity sensing mode where you can control the drone using the gyroscopes built into your phone. By tilting your phone, the Alpha Egg Drone flies in the corresponding direction. While this feature doesn’t give you the full control of flying, it might be a novelty for kids or people who have never flown a drone before. If you are looking for more control, simply turn the feature off.

This drone even has a return to home feature where the drone flies itself to where it took off from. This feature is useful if you flew the drone too high or too far away and controlling it becomes difficult. Simply hit the return to home button on the app and the K130 will fly itself back to where it took off from.

Among my favorite features of the Alpha Egg Drone is the auto takeoff and auto land functions. By touching a green button on the bottom of the app’s interface, the K130 will automatically take off. Then to land the drone, simply hit the button again. While it takes off very smoothly, it usually does tip over when landing. This is not a problem, however, because it tips over very slowly and would not constitute and a crash landing in my book.

Kai Deng K130 Flight Performance

I was surprised at how well the Kai Deng K130 preformed in the air, especially while controlling it with a mobile app. I have found other phone-controlled drones hard to use, but was pleasantly surprised at how well the Alpha Egg Drone responded to the controls. I liked the high and low speed settings as well. Beginners will find the low speed mode to be easiest to control, but if you want more control, the high speed mode is sure to please advanced drone pilots.

Alpha Egg Drone WiFi FPV

Before flying the Kai Deng K130, I was very interested to see how well it would preform in terms of its WiFi FPV system. Connecting the drone to the phone was very easy. Simply turn on your phone’s WiFi and connect to the network being emitted from the K130. Then open up the corresponding app. The app is called the “Pantamona FPV App” and can be downloaded from both the iTunes store as well as the Google Play Store for android users. I used the Android version of the app with the drone.

I was incredibly surprised at how well the drone’s FPV system appeared when being displayed on the phone app. There was very little lag, and the video quality was far better than I was expecting after purchasing the drone.

If you are interested in seeing the video quality that this drone is capable of capturing, take a look at our video review of the Kai Deng K130 on YouTube. I took it to a fairly high altitude and ended up crashing it into a tree. It was totally fine, and still flies perfectly.

Conclusion

While this egg drone is not as durable as the JJRC H36, or as fast as the MJX X800, it features an incredibly unique design, as well as an amazing WiFi FPV system. If you are looking for a unique quadcopter that has a great FPV system for a low price, consider the K130.
