In this review, we’re going to be taking a look at what is in our opinion one of the best drones for beginners, the Altair Aerial 818. I wish I knew about this drone when I was starting off with drones. The AA818 is a great quadcopter for beginner drone flyers, kids, and those looking for a budget drone with a lot of fun features.
The first thing I noticed about this drone when I took it out of the box was how light it was. The low weight on the AA818 allows is to have a longer battery life and more capabilities when flying.
I also really like the prop gaurds on this drone, which are made out of a bendable plastic. This allows the drone to simply bounce off of anything it hits and also provides protection for people, which is another reason this is one of the best drones for kids in my opinion.
The AA818 comes in a black and yellow color which suites the Hornet’s name. Also, the drone has very bright LED lights on it’s underside which make it very easy to see even in broad daylight.
Flying The Altair Aerial AA818
Like I mentioned earlier in the post, this drone is one of the best beginner drones out there, so flying the AA818 is very easy to learn, even if this is your very first quadcopter.
We flew the AA818 in some heavy wind, and the drone did an amazing job battling the wind. We at Drone Rich recommend only flying the Altair Aerial 818 in calm conditions with little to no wind.
The AA818 has a high and a low mode. The low mode is best suited for beginners while the high mode is for more advanced drone flyers. Even if you’ve been flying drones for a long time, you’ll still have a lot of fun with the AA818.
During my flight, I crashed the AA818 several times and it still flew just fine due to the built-in propeller guards.

In our video review above, we also show what the video and picture quality on the Altair Aerial 818 Hornet is like.
The AA818 comes with an attachable camera. All you have to do is install a micro SD card and the drone is ready to take pictures and videos with the simple click of a button with the app.
The camera quality was better than I expected at this price point and I definitely like that it comes with a camera. Here’s an image I took with the AA818’s camera while flying:
The Altair Aerial AA818 also comes with a cluster of cool features including swipe control, VR headset compatibility, altitude hold, and one-touch takeoff.
I was really impressed by the swipe control feature on this drone, which allows you to control the 818 Hornet by simply swiping in the direction you wan’t the drone to fly on your connected smartphone via the free app available for both iOS and Android. This is a great feature for beginners that allows you to fly the drone in an unconventional yet easy way.
The altitude hold is really nice as well. This means the drone will maintain it’s altitude without having to push up or down on the left stick of the controller. Most drones of this price point do not have this feature.
And finally, the one-touch takeoff and landing feature is incredibly easy to use. You simply push a single button on either the controller or inside the app, and the drone will take off all by itself.
In conclusion, the Altair Aerial 818 Hornet is one of the best drones for beginners on the market. It’s for sale for under $200, which is definitely a great price for a drone with this many features.
